Hello all,

I am seeking some advice please. So the airbag light on my 2001 1.9 Z3 came on today. Initial check with my creator 310 plus followed by INPA revealed this - see attached. My initial thoughts and COA are to remove the steering wheel, check, clean, attach and/or repair any possible wiring problems. Same with the slip ring. All the fuses are good, the car is 100 percent dry and there has been no recent work.

I would appreciate any steers as to what else i might consider. If the issue is the slip ring, does that have to be coded/calibrated?

Many thanks

My airbag light comes on sometimes if the seat is moved too far. Wires/plug underneath is temperamental. Once checked, code then clears.

Thanks Ianmc, common problem that one on some Zeds and one I have checked. The fault on mine seems more airbag specific.

You are on the right track. Check the continuity of the slip ring and see if there is a high resistance wire in there.

Once the airbag module sees that the circuit resistance is back to normal, the light will reset with INPA and no coding will be required.

Just a quick update on this airbag light. Well, i removed the the airbag, steering wheel and then the slip ring of the back of the steering wheel. just 3 screws secure the ring and it comes of as a complete module. I checked the continuity of the wires with a multimeter, no issues found followed by a light spray with contact cleaner. On the back of the slip ring (which you cannot see unless it is removed) is this brass ring with lugs. The lugs were extremely dirty. Given there location and what they are in contact with, i presume they are some sort of earthing point (?). Either way i cleaned them with a light abrasive, put everything back together, reset the airbag fault and the light is now off.

Good news hopefully just been a dry connection somewhere.
Stephen.
