BMW Z3 Antenna Gasket

As said and Mike is right non of them offer any protection and are just cosmetic, as far as I am aware there are no aftermarket roll hoops that are certified as providing roll-over protection and I wouldn't even like to test the BMW oem ones to be honest. :confused:

Correct :(

Although some do say that when fitted they have notice the chassis does feel a little tighter so they do have some effect just do not rely on them saving the top of your head if you accidentally flip your car.
 
I would think they must help protect a bit ? there quite sturdy & slot in .

As regards to the base if you remove the boot lining inside the boot and unbolt the hydraulic softtop pump placing it to one side you will see the actual aerial base bolted in position. It is held in with one bolt/nut which when removed will allow you to withdraw the base downwards, there is also a rubber gaiter on the inner wing but you will get the gist when you do it.

Here is a link to a UK eBay link of the grommet which with the aerial base removed can easily be fitted from above just make sure you get the right one for the narrow body wing.

However a lot of Z3 owners prefer to fit a shorter beesting type aerial rather than the above whip type aerial but that is down to your own preference;

Both those links are for the rubber grommet which is what you need as they have the correct part number of 65218389698 but the latter is twice the price so go for the 1st one.

Just cross referenced the part number and it appears it is the same grommet for all Z3's whether they are narrow or wide bodied...

My original whip antenna's rubber covering began to split, so I replaced it with the stubby sport antenna and a new grommet.

There is only one grommet for all roadsters. Here is a DIY:

The installation was easy. I lubed the new grommet's groove with tire mounting fluid which allowed some final turning. I also lubed the inside of the new outer grommet, the inside of the existing inner grommet, and the bulb tip of the amplifier base. The bulb then popped up through both grommets with a firm shove of the base.

Surely they offer more protection than no roll bar at all? I have that "style" bar on my car Mike because to retro fit was prohibited price wise and there are probably better ways of saying you wouldn't fit them to your car than calling other peoples choices crap!

All roll hoops are decoration unless both ends of each hoop are received by mounts attached to the body of the car under the rear console. There must be four structural mounts under the console.

The decorative hoops just insert their outer ends into the raised ends of the console, and offer enough rigidity for attaching wind screens.
 
The outer ends on mine fit into the original outer mounting only for the factory fitted bar and although are NOT designed to offer full protection they must offer some, which is more than none at all. As someone did say previously I hope to never have to test it anyway.

Sorry for any offence Tony but it is just not my cup of tea if it is not OEM.
 
No offence taken Mike, I take my tea with sweetner but you may want sugar is all. If we get to meet up one day I'll buy you a cuppa.
 
I have spent years and lots of money moding Merc's. For some unknown reason, I want to keep the Z OEM.

First time I ever hit the disagree button. I used to own a Mercury Monterey. It was truly a boat. You could sit 4 people comfortably in the back seat. 460 cu.in. w/4 bbl. carb. Really big heavy car. I was driving through a parking lot at night at the speed of a person walking. Now how the hell fast is that? There was a pole that had been run over and bent down to the ground, the end of which was facing me and I was driving toward it. The front of the car passed over it but it caught the frame and stopped the car dead. I hadn't put on my seat belt 'cause I was only in the parking lot going slow. Yet I flew forward over the steering wheel striking the windshield with my head. As I fell back into the seat I expected to see the windshield cracked or broken. It wasn't nor did I split open my forehead. But it taught me a strong lesson about safety and how things can happen.
If I had to pick a forum member that I would never expect to make your statement, it would be you. You always seemed to me to be a person that has a strong sense of exactly how things work and what can happen. Cars that have metal tops have built in protection. Ours don't. I think that I would probably be right in saying that you have better driving skills that most people on the road. So if it ever happens that you are involved in an accident, it probably won't be your fault. I can't bring myself to believe that you would prefer the 'look' of a car over the protection functional roll bars offer. Well Frankie all Mike did was express his opinion, which in our country he can and I respect that. Regarding driving skills we all think we could've been Mansell , Vettell or whoever but we'll never know. Anyhow I have been driving for 41 years and have never had more than 1 accident and that was when I was 18 yrs. Who can tell what is round the next bend? As I said I sincerely hope I never put my Z on it's ROOF? Goodnight Frankie from the UK it's midnight here and I'm going to work in 7hrs.
 
OK Frankie, here we go. as stated by others on this thread, non OEM hoops are just decoration. They will not save you if you put the car upside down. As far as I am aware, the wind screen surround is our role cage. The Z3 did not come with hoops on the first models.

ce of mind knowing the windscreen can act as a roll cage. My slk had the same capability.
