so on my way home today from work i could hear a metal scraping noise, tried tapping the breaks to see if it was maybe related but no joy however when i pulled on the hand break a little when driving it got louder....
I'm no mechanic but don't mind giving stuff a try so if anyone knows what may be the problem i promise to give it a good go tomorrow :)

Maybe your handbrake shoes @Derek ?

You may find the handbrake shoes have become detatched from the backing plate.
Or possible one has delaminated i would strip the rears off and take alook you don't want one locking up....

ill look that up, for the last 6 years iv had brand new cars so no need to do any maintenance to them or get my hands dirty but I'm sure i can figure that one out haha

Sounds as though the hand brake hold down pin/springs have let go. Either because the spring has broken (unlikely) or because the pin has pulled through the back plate due to the hole becoming enlarged by corrosion (most likely). This allows the shoes to scrape on the inside of the "drum".

Bits are cheap enough Derek, back plates are a pig to fit if needed. Probably a job for your local garage.;)

Tony.

@t-tony suppose i can give it a bash in the garage, if i fook it up the garage is just around the corner =))

@Andy McDonnell @Antm72 @t-tony having a look online at the process of removing and replacing just now, is this an expensive fix? and doable myself or a garage job?
@Derek I'm a mechanical Newby and I managed it. Pelican Parts has a full step by step pictorial and parts are good value from Eurocarparts. Took me the best part of a day only because I needed to be slow and treble check everything but the job is straightforward enough.

If the holes in the back plate have rotted through you could apply a washer to the pin to stop it pulling through but a new back plate would be a better option but replacing it is a little involved.

True Andy, but you "only" fitted shoes not back plates? Not meaning to knock your acheivment here mate. ;) It is possible to fit back plates by splitting them to fit them over the hubs and then welding them back together once on.

Tony.

good point there tony, i think the father in law will need to get involved and lend a hand

Yeah, luckily once I'd cleaned them up they looked in ok nik or I might have wept :(

Distinct possibility mate. Not a nice job.:(

Tony.

This will be looked at and fixed this weekend woo. How much more damage would I do if I'm driving it short distances?

None at all, if you drove it long distance the noise will eventually go, that's what happened to mine. The pad turned to dust lol

More help please
Following the steps on the below link I cannot get the hub off. Got everything else off but the hub is stock on solid. Anyone shed some light on what I'm doing wrong?
