Need to pick eveybodies brains a bit.

I was Helping @Millhouse Dean clearing ABS and airbag fault codes amongst others when he asked me about coding the key to the car so the remote buttons work.

The car locks and unlocks with the key fine but only if you put the key in one way. Buttons to the rear but if you put the key in with the buttons to the front the car won't lock or unlock?

Next, I only thought when I got home but Dean's car is prefacelift but hasn't the diamond shaped key but has the later key type so can this be programmed in the same way.

ie
- Sit in the car with all the doors shut and windows up with your key fobs (all your fobs need to be done at the same time)
- With one of your keys turn the ignition on then off and remove the key
- Press and hold the unlock botton and then press the lock button 3 times.
- Release all buttons and the locks will bounce up and down.
- Repeat this with the other key/keys (press and hold unlock and press lock 3 times, locks will bounce)

Note: Only switch your ignition on once, doing so again while programming will reset the process and you will have to start again.

Dean has a type 1 as I do but I thought the earlier cars had the type 2 keys.

Not too sure Brian but mine is a 2000 model and has the type 1 key. I looked on carweb today for key programming but they only show post 1999 car which they say have type 2 keys.

Tony.

ps. I will scan and post this info here in a little while.

Earlier cars ie pre Oct 98 had the type of key picture below that has a built in Amber LED light, the spare key was same shape without the light. They also had a separate key fob for the alarm/central locking also pictured below.

Hi @Aceman did the pre 98 cars have remote locking or just from the key?

Edit looks as if Dean's car is '97

I think of the very first zeds into this country came without central locking but that was only a handful so just about all of them had the EWS system installed.

Just to muddy the waters further. Our Z3 is a 2002 (one of the last) and has a type 1 key in your picture Brian. Our Z4 is a 2006 and has a type 2 key.

Mine is a 99 and I have a type 3 'flip' key :joyful:

Dave that's only cos you modified it. my E61 had the type 3 but no flip blade as it docks into the steering column. The F11 just has to have the fob in the car.

Yes, my original is a type 1

Agree - I believe the earlier EWS systems were UK dealer installed not a factory build installation. Certainly the case with mine Dec 97 build - Apr 98 on road. I have the original paperwork for this.

I have a '96 Z3 and a different key that you show: One key is for the ignition and the other key is the door key. The ignition key has a button that activates a small light. No key activated car lock. Frankie
