How To Guide Gearbox oil change

I seem to think about one and a half litres Baz

Tony.

Just done added the oil , I thought I'd bought too much but used some of the other quart bottle , I got Redline MTL , been for a spin all ok .
Not as smooth as my Mercedes but that's an auto :D

Having a coffee waiting for the diff. to drain , quite a bit came out of the filler plug ?

Possibly filled with the car not level, or it wasn’t allowed to drain down to the correct level before the filler plug was refitted. This often happens as people rush jobs, especially in garages.

Tony.

Guess how long it took me to fill the diff. ? Forget the stop watch you might need a calendar

You didn't stand the bottles of oil in hot water beforehand then?

Tony.

I suppose that would have helped but I couldn't get the hose right , in the end I pushed it down the middle spare wheel bolt hole and then put a bottle jack under the hose as it entered the fill hole to get a decent incline . I think my hose was too stiff (titter ye not ) .

Well mate, you got it done in the end and that's what counts.

Tony.

Always best to have some new sealing washers ready for the diff plugs, they are alloy and the last one I refilled both washers were crumbling and were not fit to go back on, new ones to hand solved the problem.

Does anyone have a definitive guide to oil equivalents for BMW oil types?

Having read numerous other pages, I've yet to establish what "Yellow Label" MTF- LT1 actually is!

Are the plugs in the same place and is the process the same for a Getrag gearbox as that for a ZF?

Drain plug on the bottom, filler plug drivers side of gearbox. Ensure you can undo the filler plug first before draining. The plugs are a taper fit so have no sealing washers, you need a hex key on a socket wrench to undo them.
The Diff plugs do have alloy sealing washers, best to have a new pair to hand, the originals will have corroded by now and resemble lace.

Thanks Tony, just confirming: is this for a Getrag manual?

Having recently changed my transmission fluid, I’ve noticed I have a very slight “weep” from the drain plug. I’m aware it’s a tapered fit - is it ok to use PTFE tape on the threads or should I pick up some other type of thread sealant?

PTFE tape will do the job jimbob. What I use before I refit the plug.
